Lions vs Falcons: Why Are So Many Teams Named After Birds? (VIDEO)

Riff Fest 2023 is officially in the books, and it was an unforgettable night of rock and roll. Last night, I Prevail, Bad Omens, Badflower, and more took the stage at Pine Knob to celebrate the annual festival.

However, Riff Fest isn't the only big happening in Detroit this week. Our beloved Detroit Lions take on the Atlanta Falcons today...another bird team. We lost to the Seahawks last week. Then you also have the Eagles, Ravens, Cardinals, and I think that's it. However, that's just in the NFL! Once you add other sports like MLB, NBA, and NHL, you add many more birds like Blue Jays, Hawks, Pelicans, and Cardinals, again, amongst others.

With all these birds, it can be hard to remember which team we're playing in a given week, because we know it's one of those birds, but can't seem to remember because there are simply too many of them. So, I decided to address this problem and get to the bottom of it. Surely, I can't be the only one bothered by this, right?

So, at Riff Fest, I went around and played some Tailgate Trivia with people before the show in a game that I'm calling, 'Damn All These Birds.' Check it out below!

That was fun! It's good to see that I'm not the only one who's noticed all of these birds taking over our sports. I just don't get why we keep reverting to bird names when there are so many other names out there. Show Turtles some love. Maybe name a team after an exotic animal like an Anteater. I don't know, I'm just spitballing here. What I'm saying is there are plenty of other names to choose from. Aren't we over doing it with all these Cardinals? Or Cardinal in Stanford's case.

If you enjoy these Tailgate Trivia street bits, then make sure to check out some of the other ones I've done. Such as 'Ahh It's A Ghost!!' or 'Make Some Noise' or even 'Sublime with Rome (and Other Italian Cities).' Plenty to go around!

Special thank you to everyone who participated and everyone who came out to Riff Fast last night. It was the most fun I've had in a long long time. If you weren't able to make it, check out this photo gallery Meltdown put together!

Behind-The-Scenes Pictures from Riff Fest 2023

That's it, another hugh Riff Fest is in the books. Great bands, great crowd, great weather! All of those combined made it a perfect day!

Thank you to all who said Hello, gave a hand shake, fist bump, or a yell.

There's too many people to to give kudos to, but I have to mention Jade, Ken and the WRIF promo teams (old and new...LOL). A job well done by all involved!

Here's some "behind-the-scenes" pictures from the show...enjoy!

Can't wait to see you all at Riff Fest next year! Who do you want to see at the show next year? Let me know on Twitter!

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
