Detroit has many nicknames, from the Motor City to Hockeytown, The D to Motown, there’s certainly no shortage of aliases here. However, could we also add a new nickname to the list? Could Detroit be…Flavortown?

I think it definitely has potential! Not only is the city of Detroit home of many fantastic restaurants, and specifically Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, but Michigan, as a whole, has tons of one-of-a-kind options for someone looking for a unique meal that isn’t something you can find anywhere.

I’ve decided to find 5 Michigan Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives that I think Guy Fieri needs to come back to Michigan for and showcase. I know he’s a big fan of the Mitten State, and is buddies with Kid Rock, as we’ve seen before, Guy also recently opened his chicken joint, Chicken Guy, in Livonia, so getting him back here shouldn’t be too difficult, right?

Guy Fieri and Triple D have already highlighted some of the best restaurants in Michigan including: The Union Woodshop, The Fly Trap, Polish Village Cafe, and more…but, he’s got some catching up to do. There are many more restaurants to discover here in Michigan from Detroit to Grand Rapids and beyond.

So, Guy…consider this an invitation to come back to Michigan and try out these Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives that I’m sure you’re going to love and consider, “Out Of Bounds.” Here’s the five local places I’m suggesting for future episodes of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri on The Food Network.

  • Pontiac Super Chief - Pontiac, MI

While every Detroiter is familiar with the ongoing battle between Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island, and both of those would be terrific stops for Guy, if he’s looking for the best Coney Dog in the Detroit area, he’s actually going to have to leave downtown.

After many trials and errors, I have, indeed, found the best Coney Dog Michigan has to offer, and it’s in Pontiac. Pontiac Super Chief has hands down the greatest Coney Dog known to man. You can’t beat those foot long coney dogs with those delicious grilled buns. Seriously, they’re to die for. One time, I proclaimed I could eat my height in footlongs. Turn out, I would have been correct if I stood two and a half feet tall.

Guy would go crazy biting into one of these, they aren’t like any other Coney Dog out there. The small restaurant is perfect for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. If you’re looking for the best Coney in Detroit, head up to Pontiac, it’ll be worth the trip, I promise.

  • The Bucket Bar - Mears, MI

What if I told you the best pizza in Michigan isn’t actually from Buddy’s? You’d have a hard time believing me, I’m sure. What if I told you the best pizza in Michigan is from a golf course in Mears, Michigan? You’d never believe me…but you should.

The Bucket Bar has only been operating for a few years now at Golden Sands Golf Course on Michigan’s West Side, but it has already made a massive impact. For me, it’s all about the crust. It’s this beautiful braided dough with tasty herbs on top, and it is insanely good. Typically, I’m a Detroit-style pizza guy. This is one of those times I’ll make the exception, and forget the pan. We like to get the Steak and Jalapeño Pizza that comes with a unique béchamel sauce…*chef’s kiss* it’s unbelievable…you’ll forget you’re at a golf course.

Guy would be blown away trying this pizza, especially given it’s location. He’d probably make a pun about a Hole In One with the hole being his mouth. I’d love for Guy to come tee off in Flavortown.

  • O'Malley's Galley - Ortonville, MI

O’Malley’s Galley is a hidden treasure along M-15 that you’ve probably driven by 1,000 times and didn’t notice…big mistake. Everything I’ve tried there has been fantastic, or as Guy would say, “the bomb dot com.”

I’ve had fish and chips at 5 star restaurants, from places that have gone head to head with Bobby Flay, at local places in London, Dublin, and all over…none could beat the fish and chips from O’Malley’s Galley. The Salmon BLT is another highlight…and the New England Clam Chowder…and The French Onion Soup…and…you get it…

  • Taystee's Burgers - Dearborn, MI

They’re gaining popularity now, and more locations are opening, so Guy better hurry up before it gets too big. I think the fact that one of Detroit’s best burgers comes from inside a gas station would make it worthy of an appearance on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I mean…it really is totally on-brand for the show.

I’d love to see Guy feature Ali’s Notch-Yo-Burger which Doritos and Nacho Cheese on it. Many have said it’s the best burger in Detroit. That’s not just my opinion…it’s actually won several awards.

  • Bunkhouse Burgers - Clarkston, MI

We’ve already seen Guy Fieri enjoy The Union Woodshop with Kid Rock during his trip to Clarkston. Now, I think he needs to come back and check out the newer Bunkhouse Burgers. It has a drive-thru, so I’m going to consider it a Drive-In. Same thing, right?

The Hot Mess is my favorite thing on the menu, which is their version of a Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich. It is bangin’. You’ll definitely need one of they tasty milkshakes to go along with it and ease that pain. The Mac Daddy is a burger that features their world-famous Mac and cheese on top of the burger. It really doesn’t get much better than that…

Come back to Clarkston, Guy! I’ll be waiting and totally willing to show you around my hometown…again.

One time, I dressed up as Guy Fieri and went and did my own version of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in Ann Arbor and participated in the Mt. Nacheesmo Challenge. How did it go? Well…check it out below.
