Screamin Scott’s 1st Riff Shift on WRIF, December 10th 1996
December 10th, 1996 is a day my goal was reached in my radio career. In 1996 Z-rock 102.7 FM switched to the Bear with Ted Nugent taking my morning show which lasted 3 1/2 years in Detroit.
WRIF was quick to sweep me up and bring me over to the WRIF staff. The first person I was introduced to was Arthur P. and in a deep voice told me, “Welcome to the Team.”
Funny story- my first shift on WRIF was 12 hours. Yes, one long shift starting on a Saturday night at Midnight ’till 6 a.m. then 6 a.m. ’till noon. The problem was the DJ that was scheduled (not going to mention their name), didn’t show up at 6 a.m. Being so new to the WRIF staff, I didn’t have any numbers to call, so I say, what the hell I will just keep going. It wasn’t until 11 a.m. the DJ that was supposed to come in called the hotline in the studio to say sorry. In the back of my mind, I was so pumped I didn’t mind nor did I want him to get in trouble.
Another jock who was in the building on an overnight shift welcomed me to the company by introducing me to the company freezer. Puzzled by it, he told me to look in the very back for something. It was a bottle of Jack Daniels. I was too scared to partake in any drinking while I was on the radio on my first day. My biggest fear was saying the call letters wrong. But I had practiced those magical call letters all my life. So my first day on WRIF was one for the books and a bit of screaming history I will remember all my life. The dream I had as a kid finally came true. A total of 36 years of veteran of radio and now 29 years here in Detroit on the dial. Now the story of my cover band ,”CHIT” got started is another story for another day 😉
