What You Should Be Watching: Nerdradio Movie Picks for 2020
As we begin the new year it feels like there are an avalanche of concerts being announced but let’s not forget what we have to look forward to at the movies in 2020. While there’s no new Star Wars on the horizon and the MCU appears to be in a rebuilding phase Nerdradio’s own, Mike Pandoff gives us 10 good reasons to head to the movies this year. My only question is WHERE’S SONIC THE HEDGEHOG MIKE?
Well hello Nerds, hope you enjoyed Star Wars over the holidays. Sadly nothing really concrete to talk about on that front. This time I decided to challenge myself and come up with a list of my Top 10 movies for 2020. Well none will be Marvel or DC, some might be cheats but overall I tried to pick a nice variety of movies I think should be checked out. If I miss any feel free to let us know! Also some trailers might not be out yet, pushed this off as long as I could!
10. Free Guy
Starring Deadpool, I mean Ryan Reynolds. Follow what seems to be a typical bank teller find out he is a NPC player in free roaming world that is like Grand Theft Auto. Shawn Levy known for “Night at the Museum Trilogy” will be directing, and shall be interesting what he can do with a full action comedy. Look for it on July 3rd.
9. Mulan
Now being a 90’s baby “a real one, not 97-99”. Mulan was a big deal when it cinemas in 1998. Well Disney has decided to do another live action remake. I’m liking the more realistic approach and the story being more war setting. Overall this is high on my list, even without the talking dragon and music numbers. Look for it March 27th.
8. Halloween Kills
A couple years ago Chuck Bean and I did a Halloween special on Nerdradio and at the time we didn’t think the Halloween franchise would make a comeback like this. With everyone coming back from 2018 reboot/ true sequel. I’m just hoping that this won’t make the same mistake as Rob Zombie’s did. It will be slashing its way into theatres October 16th.
7. The Way Back
It always seems like Ben Affleck disappears for a little, recovers and decides to show the world how damn good he can be as an actor. This story is about a man who blew his chance at college basketball and battles his addiction. Well his shot at redemption is to coach his old high school. Watch the trailer and tell me whether or not you get a little choked up, look for it March 6th.
6. Ghostbuster’s Afterlife
Well I would need to write a whole article to describe what needed to be done for this movie to be even made. So I’ll just say this about what the trailer made me feel, Force Awakens meets the ageless wonder Paul Rudd. Let’s hope they show respect to the past, while passing the Proton Packs for the next generation. Call them on July 3rd
5. The King’s Man
Now before you even think it, I already know the Kingsman property is a comic book. In my mind these first two movies have been a young James Bond with the campy 60s spy movie…turned up to an 11. Matthew Vaughn returns for the third installment in this franchise, as it will take place during WWI and show how this legendary spy agency got its swag and most importantly its manners. Suit up for it on September 18th.
4. Bill & Ted Face the Music.
Well clearly something went wrong after Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey because the Wyld Stallions’ music unfortunately hasn’t changed our world. This has been a dream project for Keanu Reeves at least since 2014. Let’s hope his comeback keeps going and doesn’t disappoint us dudes! Look to rock out on August 26th.
3. No Time to Die
Well Daniel Craig has been one of the most popular James Bonds ever, and also consistent with quality action spy thrillers. This looks like he will go out with a bang in his final outing, the only question after we see it, where do we go from here with this character. Don’t miss out on this on April 10th.
2. Top Gun Maverick
Growing up there were two characters that made me want to become a pilot of some kind. Luke Skywalker and Maverick, and boy this looks like Tom Cruise is bringing it 35 years later. The amount of practical effects and use of cameras in cockpits have me beyond excited for this film. Just look at this trailer for the making of this movie, and ask yourself one thing: Do you have it, the need for speed on June 26th?
1. Tenet
All I have this to say about this, well 2 things actually. One: Christopher Nolan and Second: watch the trailer at your own risk. Not much has been said or even known about this movie, but expect this 100% original idea from the Nolan brothers to be another masterpiece and possibly be on the same level as Inception. This will be coming out on July 17th
