Three Dumb Things I’ve Said To Celebrities – Meltdown
Sometimes you just say dumb stuff. We all do it. Sometimes you say dumb stuff to celebrities. Here’s three instances of that from me.
Alice Cooper – The first time I met and interviewed Alice Cooper was in the late 90s. Man, I was a huge Cooper fan growing up and couldn’t wait to meet the legend. During a conversation at my in-laws house a few days previous, my mother-in-law quipped as to how he golfs with all of his makeup on.
The days of the interview came. Alice was doing a record store signing at an old Harmony House, where I would interview him live on the air before he started greeting the fans. I can’t recall what brilliant question I asked him, but as we were talking, the thought of what my mother-in-law said to me….so I asked him. His response? “That’s the stupidest question I’ve ever heard”. LOL
I’ve interviewed Alice several times since then. He’s one of my favorites to speak with and always ripe with a story or six.
The second one I’ll tell you about happened while having a lunch with NASCAR legend Tony Stewart. I met a couple winners at Michigan Speedway, where Tony took us for a ride around the track at about 145 m.p.h.. While we were having lunch, just talking like dudes, I brought up then Jeff Gordon’s hot model wife. I said to Tony “Have you ever seen Jeff Gordon’s wife?” He appropriately, mocked and teased me saying “No, I’ve never seen her”. Dumb question number two.
The last one I’ll bring up is from Woodstock 94′. I was there working for my previous radio station. They had press buses set up at certain locations they we would take back to satellite parking lots. As I was waiting for the bus with another person, I recognized them with the help of the one street light above us. “Hey, you’re Bill Maher!” He was there working for the Jay Leno show. Yes, a dumb comment for sure, because he didn’t need me to tell him who he was.
