Cask Strength Whiskey: What Is It & How Should You Drink It – Meltdown
I’ve “known” Rob Dietrich, the Metallica Blackened master distiller, for a few years. I say “known,” because we had never met until last month at a Metallica show in Pittsburgh. I interviewed him pre-pandemic, and we struck up a friendship through text messages and Zoom interviews. That’s the way it’s done these days, of course.

What a great guy, with a really cool job…making Blackened whiskey for Metallica! It doesn’t get much cooler than that. His story is unreal, but the reason for this article is to pass along an article I recently saw about drinking cask strength whiskey. I thought it would be of help to some of you whiskey drinkers out there. Check out the article below to get your whiskey on.

By the way, if you haven’t tried Blackened yet, what are you waiting for? It’s fantastic. The real deal. Keep an eye on this space for an interview with Rob coming up soon.

Flashback: Metallica at the Pontiac Silverdome in 2003
On July 4, 2003, Metallica kicked off their Sumer Sanitarium Tour at the Pontiac Silverdome. The tour featured Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones and Mudvayne as the opening acts. Since Detroit was the first date of the tour, Metallica had to do some stage rehearsals and they invited us and some lucky WRIF listeners to check out this once in a lifetime experience. Listeners got to watch Metallica perform a full dressed rehearsal with pyro. You can check out some photos from that day before the tour officially kicked off the next day below. One cool fact about this tour was that it was bassist Robert Trujillo’s first tour with the band after replacing longtime bassist Jason Newsted. So I guess you can say we got to see Roberts first ever show with Metallica! Were you lucky enough to check out the rehearsal and/or the fourth of July show? Let us know in the comments!
Meltdown started on the mighty WRIF on the evening of Halloween, 1995. Technically, his first on-air shift was the morning of November 1st. Moving to the Motor City from Buffalo, N.Y., he has built a career and family. Over his almost three-decade stint at RIFF, he's had the privilege to work with some of the biggest personalities in Detroit radio history. He boasts of being just the second-afternoon drive jock in the station's illustrious 53-year history.
Along with his love for rock music and attending concerts, he's also an avid Harley-Davidson enthusiast and hockey player. He plays year-round and manages to squeeze in a few charity games throughout the year. Meltdown writes about the Detroit Red Wings, rock music, and Detroit concert venues.
