Kenny Wayne Shepherd Says Playing David Gilmour’s Stratocaster Was A “Really Amazing Moment” – Meltdown
On my most recent episode of Talkin’ Rock, Kenny Wayne Shepherd told me about playing the iconic black Stratocaster that David Gilmour from Pink Floyd played on so many of those classic songs. He did it a couple months back at an Indianapolis Colts football game.
“Well, I mean, that was a really amazing moment. Um, we did that, Jim, my friend Jim Irsay, he’s the owner of the Indianapolis Colts football team, and he’s a big collector of, of really amazing things. And, and that’s one of the things that he owns. He bought that. And, uh, we’ve been doing concerts where he’s taking his collection out on the road, like a traveling museum, and he makes it free to the public.” He jammed with an all-star band, which you can watch below.
He also told me his thoughts on the famous guitarist. “Yeah. Uh, well with David Gilmour, he’s like, man, I don’t know dude. He’s like such an incredible player and he’s so tasty and so melodic and he has such restraint, and it’s like, none of it is flash. It’s all complete. Just intuition and feel.”
He answered the question of greatest guitar song. “I know like guitar songs, like, I think Jimmy Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Child’ is probably one of the greatest rock and roll guitar anthems ever written. You know, or like Van Halen’s ‘Eruption’ and things like that. But, but certainly ‘Comfortably Numb’ and just, it’s probably one of the most tasty guitar solos ever.”
