Fired Police Chief Strips and Walks in the Snow
A New Hampshire police chief who was stripped of his duties decided to take the punishment a little further — by stripping off his clothes and walking outside in his underwear.
The incident happened Tuesday night after Richard Lee, who’d been police chief of Croydon’s one-man department for 20 years, was canned in a special board meeting. Although Lee hadn’t done anything wrong, the board’s three-person panel voted to eliminate his job in favor of contracting law enforcement services from the New Hampshire State Police.
Lee was told to hand over his keys, his guns, his badge and his uniform — and that’s exactly what he did. “I gave them my uniform shirt; I gave them my turtleneck; I gave them my ballistic vest,” Lee says. “I took off my pants, put my boots back on and walked out the door.” Lee says he walked through a snowstorm wearing nothing but underwear and boots for a mile before his wife picked him up.
