Winter Classy Charity Hockey Game To Benefit The Children’s Miracle Network Friday In Fraser
When Karen Newman asks you to participate in a charity hockey game, you ask her where and when. It’s really as simple as that. Well, she called me last week and asked if I’d get involved in a game to be played at Fraser on Friday, December, 8th. Of course, I said YES.
The Winter Classy started roughly 9-10 years ago along with a few friends. According to co-creator Doug Ross “For the first couple of years, the money was going to individuals that could have benefitted from some help. In the past few years, we have been donating to larger organizations. This year we are partnering with Karen and the Beaumont Children’s Hospital, along with the Children’s Miracle Network.”
As far as the game is concerned, there will be stuff for the entire family. “During the game, we typically have a silent auction, 50/50, and this year we will be doing a teddy bear toss, and the bears will be donated along with the money we raise this year.”
I hope to see you there. You can get your tickets here.
Detroit Red Wings Alumni vs. Westland Wild!
The Detroit Red Wings alumni took on the Westland Wild Wings last Friday, led by team captain, mayor Bill Wild. Even though the good guys – the Wild Wings – lost 7-3, it was a great event that brought in money for the Mike Modano Ice Arena.
Here’s a photo gallery of some of the action. Our own Meltdown wore #11, and scored a goal in the defeat!

Meltdown started on the mighty WRIF on the evening of Halloween, 1995. Technically, his first on-air shift was the morning of November 1st. Moving to the Motor City from Buffalo, N.Y., he has built a career and family. Over his almost three-decade stint at RIFF, he's had the privilege to work with some of the biggest personalities in Detroit radio history. He boasts of being just the second-afternoon drive jock in the station's illustrious 53-year history.
Along with his love for rock music and attending concerts, he's also an avid Harley-Davidson enthusiast and hockey player. He plays year-round and manages to squeeze in a few charity games throughout the year. Meltdown writes about the Detroit Red Wings, rock music, and Detroit concert venues.
