Meltdown and Austin Meade

Austin Meade will be touring the country this fall and winter with the guys in Dirty Honey. You’ll be able to see him live at Saint Andrews Hall on December 7th.

As luck would have it, he was in the area last week and swung by Full Throttle Thursday at Stingers Bar in Wixom. He spoke to me for a few minutes, then did an unplugged set for the fans in attendance.

We talked about his upbringing, influences, playing dive bars and lots more.

He said his father took him to concerts as a young kid. “I love getting blown away by the experience of big speakers.” He’s a true musician and that’s what draws him into the music he likes. Speaking of fathers, he told me he’s becoming one very soon.

Godsmack, Staind and Mix Master Mike Rule The Night At Pine Knob

It was another great night at Pine Knob!

Mix Master Mike opened the show by demonstrating his unreal DJing abilities. Mixing popular songs and mashing them up. Of course, with a little Detroit rock mixed in. It was great to see him after for a bit. I haven’t seen him in person since I introduced him on stage at Comerica Park before Metallica, six years ago! He’s an awesome guy! I also had the chance to me “White Boy Rick”.

The guys from Staind took to the stage just before 7:30 and ripped through their set, kicking it off with the latest single “Lowest In Me” Aaron Lewis and the band were on point throughout. Playing songs like “It’s Been A While”, “Mudshovel” and others.

Godsmack started around 9:10 as a video of Mix Master Mike played on the huge tapestry covering the stage, before being yanked down to expose the giant Godsmack logo. Hit after hit throughout their set spanning their 25 year career. Opening with “When Legends Rise” and going through “1,000hp”, “Whatever”, “Awake”, “Bulletproof” and many others. The highlight for me is always the drum battle. Many don’t know that singer Sully Erna was a drummer when he started out. He’s no slouch! Him and Shannon Larkin totally rip up that part of the set.

I saw Sully, guitarist Tony Rombola for a few minutes earlier in the night. Special thanks to bassist Robbie Merrill for the hook-up.

Meltdown started on the mighty WRIF on the evening of Halloween, 1995. Technically, his first on-air shift was the morning of November 1st. Moving to the Motor City from Buffalo, N.Y., he has built a career and family. Over his almost three-decade stint at RIFF, he's had the privilege to work with some of the biggest personalities in Detroit radio history. He boasts of being just the second-afternoon drive jock in the station's illustrious 53-year history. Along with his love for rock music and attending concerts, he's also an avid Harley-Davidson enthusiast and hockey player. He plays year-round and manages to squeeze in a few charity games throughout the year. Meltdown writes about the Detroit Red Wings, rock music, and Detroit concert venues.
