Detroit Lions Kicker Out For Season After Severe Injury Preparing For Practice
Detroit Lions kicker Michael Badgley will now be out for the season after suffering what’s been described as a “severe injury” preparing for practice. What does this mean for the team?
You never want to see a player go down with an injury. Especially when you’re just starting your pre-season training! If they do go down, you hope they’ll be back at it soon. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case for Detroit Lions kicker Michael Badgley. The team will now be without their starting kicker for the season after the injury. Kickers may be the butt of many jokes, but they’re incredibly important to NFL teams!
Detroit Lions Kicker Out For Season After Suffering Severe Injury
Yes, kickers will often get made fun of. They typically aren’t as athletic or popular as the starting Quarterback or Wide Receiver. However, they’re a very important part of winning games. Seriously, how many games come down to a final kick? Over time? Or a missed extra point? It happens all the time! Now, the Lions will be putting their faith in someone else for this ultra-important role.
According to Click On Detroit, Detroit’s primary kicker will miss the entire 2024 season after suffering what’s described as a “severe injury” while warming up for practice. Detroit Lions reporter Tim Twentyman made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) and commenters are baffled. Asking “how do you get injured preparing for practice?”
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the injury is a torn hamstring, per Click On Detroit. Yeah, that’s pretty important for someone who’s responsibility is to kick. You need your legs to be as healthy as they can be and there are few injuries more nagging and lingering than a hamstring injury. They typically aren’t the easiest to recover from and when kicking is your job, it means a lot. Now, the team has a decision to make. They can lean on Jake Bates the former UFL standout who they signed after his breakout season with the Michigan Panthers in the United Football League. Or, they can test the waters of Free Agency to see what’s out there or make a trade. Right now, it appears that they’re going to see who’s available in Free Agency or on other teams to compete with Bates. Training camp just started this week, so it’s still early and there’s no reason to hit the panic alarm.
Let’s be honest, kicking hasn’t been a strength on the Detroit Lions since we said goodbye to Matt Prater. We’ve had an endless wheel of kickers coming and going and now it looks like that will continue on. Not only are we going to miss out on a valuable team member, we’ll also be missing out on some eye candy. Last year, Michael Badgley was named the most handsome player in the NFL by Gamblino! Hopefully, the Detroit Lions kicker will make a speedy and healthy recovery and will be back and better than ever next season following the Detroit Lions Super Bowl victory.
