AEW’s Paul Wight Talks About His Career Beginning In Detroit And Danhausen
All Elite Wrestling is coming back to Detroit, playing the LCA on May 10th. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 3rd.
Paul Wight took a few minutes to talk about things wrestling, including how his career started right here in Detroit. “My first match was, uh, Halloween Havoc at Joe Lewis Arena as a very memorable beginning. I fell off the roof of Cobo Hall after a Monster truck duel with Hulk Hogan, and then made it to the match and, uh, competed against Hulk Hogan for the World Heavyweight Championship, which I left with that championship that night, my first match.” He went on to explain that he pretty much started at the top. “So I started in the penthouse, nowhere to go, but the outhouse after that.”
I also asked him about a local guy who also wrestles for AEW, Danhausen. After a slight chuckle, he told me how his determination got him to where he is. “Danhausen exemplifies where there’s a will, there’s a way. I mean, you don’t have to be seven foot tall, 400 something pounds to be entertaining, to be successful in pro wrestling. I mean, that’s the thing. There’s something for everyone. and, you know, it’s not necessarily you have to be in great shape or be this bodybuilder, CrossFit looking type fitness physique. It’s not about that. It’s about making a connection with the people. And that’s the thing that Danhausen has really been able to do is, you know, put in some wrestling, but his gimmick has such a connection with the audience. They look forward to him and that’s, that’s great for him cause it allows him to, to do what he loves to do for a living and be a part of the industry, you know?”
