Lucy Liu is heading back to the big screen, joining the cast of New Line’s big-budget sequel adaptation of the DC comic, Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Shazam! sequel will once again star Zachary Levi as the adult version of teenager Billy Batson, who transforms into a superhero. Asher Angel returns to play teenager Billy Batson. David F. Sandberg is back as director.

Plot details of the Henry Gayden script are being kept under wraps, but New Line announced that Liu will play a villainess named Kalypso. The character is the second daughter of Atlas, one of the Titans of ancient Greece and one of the A’s in “Shazam” — the name is an acronym of ancient gods and heroes.

The character is also the sister to Hespera, the the villainous daughter of the god Atlas who is being played by Helen Mirren. Mirren’s role is somewhat mysterious, as Hespera does not have a clear equivalent from the DC comics, but she undoubtedly has some feelings about Shazam’s powers in relation to her father. Along with “the strength of Hercules, the power of Zeus, the wisdom of Solomon, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.”

Rachel Zegler, the star of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming West Side Story, has also joined the cast.

Liu starred in CBC’s series Elementary from 2012 to 2019 opposite Jonny Lee Miller and then in the dramedy series Why Women Kill with Ginnifer Goodwin, created by Mark Cherry. Feature-wise, she last appeared in Netflix’s 2018 romantic comedy Set It Up with Taye Diggs and Pete Davidson.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods begins shooting this May and is set for release on June 2, 2023.
