The Pistons Are A Tragedy On The Court
The Detroit Pistons are one of the most embarrassing stories in the sporting world in quite some time. A tragedy that dates back to the creation of Instagram. I present you with the Detroit Pistons. An organization that has somehow made nearly every possible decision incorrectly over the past 15 years. This tragedy of a franchise has one constant problem during this period of time and that is ownership.
Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores has owned the team since purchasing the Pistons for $325 Million dollars back in 2011. While from a business standpoint Gores made a brilliant decision with the team now being worth over 3.1 billion. He financially has done very well, even organizing amazing charitable events and organizations throughout Michigan. Something he hasn’t been able to bring this city however, is wins.
A Tragedy on the Court
The Motor City is a place with an identity. Tens of thousands of blue-collar workers built and continue to fuel this city. One thing we demand from our sport teams, is winning. It seems obvious, but Detroit is not a city where we take our sports lightly. Having a tragedy like this basketball team in our city, is unforgivable to this fan base. Less than a week ago, Pistons fans were chanting “sell the team” as they lost their 26th consecutive game, tying the all-time NBA record for most losses in a row. Things to need to change.

Tuesday night the Pistons fell to the Brooklyn Nets 118-112 for the NBA record 27th straight loss. While nothing seems like a quick solution, changes still need to be made. While Monty Williams, Troy Weaver and the players all have a part to play in this tragedy of a season, who is the most at fault? Ultimately everything falls on whoever constructed the team and who enabled the construction.
Why isn’t it working?
Troy Weaver assembled this team through the draft, trades and free agency. This is the result of his work. This team features terrible play from players who don’t complement each other’s skill sets. I blame Tom Gores and Troy Weaver the most. To add insult to injury, Tom Gores finally spoke up once the team lost their 26th straight game and stated that “other than winning, and we should win more games, we do a lot in the community.”
The sentiment behind Gores words is not bad, but in reality, this is the exact opposite of what Detroit fans wanted to hear. Gores seems to be a good person and gives back more to the community than most. This is indeed something that should be commended, as he donates more than I could ever imagine. On the basketball side of things, he went on to promise change in the new year and I for one hope he delivers. For now, we will have to live with a tragedy that is the Detroit Pistons
