‘Start, Bench, Trade: Thanksgiving Side Dishes’ With The WRIF Staff
What's the best Thanksgiving side dish? (Photo by John Moore/Getty Images)
Get your favorite most comfortable sweatpants out because Thanksgiving has arrived! All of that working out and eating healthy that you’ve maintained throughout the year comes to a close today. It’s the biggest eating day of the year and you best believe we are ready. In eager anticipation of the coming feast, members of the WRIF staff played a game of ‘Start, Bench, Trade’ with Thanksgiving side dishes!
All of the jocks were given a choice of the same three side dishes: stuffing, mashed potatoes, and green bean casserole. Since football is a big part of our Thanksgiving traditions here in Detroit, we decided to add an element of our favorite game to this challenge. One side dish gets to start, one is put on the bench, and then the third is traded away.
Start, Bench, Trade: Thanksgiving Side Dishes
In case you aren’t familiar with sports, hey that’s okay, I’ll break it down in a more simple fashion. You’re starting your favorite of the three, benching the second favorite, and your least favorite gets traded away. It’s the side dish you believe you could go without on Thanksgiving. However, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Let’s be honest, these are three delicious and well-known side dishes. Without any one of these, no Thanksgiving dinner is complete.
Hilarity ensues as the WRIF staff give their picks. Their choices are all different (for the most part) and they showcase their own personality and perspectives with the picks. We brought our A-game for this video. You’ll hear picks from Chuck The Freak, Jade, Meltdown, Aimee Brooks, Al Beck from Dave and Chuck The Freak, and all of the WRIF weekenders like Anne Erickson, Steve Black, Jonel, Nate, and Cort Freeman.
Check out the video of The Riff airstaff naming their favorite and least favorite Thanksgiving side dishes below! We also want to hear from you on this! Who do you agree with? Who got it all wrong? Let us know in the comments! From our WRIF Family to yours we hope to have a Happy Thanksgiving! As always, thank you for rocking with The Riff! Gobble gobble, friends!
What Your Favorite Thanksgiving Side Says About You
‘Tis the season to eat a lot of turkey! The weather is getting colder, and the winter holidays are slowly approaching, but first up is the most delicious holiday, Thanksgiving. It’s a time to reunite with family and friends to gather around the table and enjoy a homecooked meal together.
Thanksgiving Morning
Imagine this… It’s a chilly Thursday morning, and you wake up to do one of three things. You are either staying in your jammies, brewing a cup of coffee, and plopping on the couch to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Or maybe you’re throwing on your sneakers to run a Turkey Day marathon, or maybe you’re the GOAT of the day, the Thanksgiving chef. But whichever person you are on the morning of Thanksgiving, you all gather around the table for an incredible meal. There is one exception: if you are not the Thanksgiving Day chef, you should be the Thanksgiving Day dishwasher. It’s polite to whoever cooked the meal you’ve been looking forward to all year.
Thanksgiving Sides
Of course, turkey is the star of the holiday, and taking on the responsibility of cooking the bird is a big deal. But, we all know the sides are the best part of the Thanksgiving dish. Everyone has their favorite side that they look forward to most, but have you ever wondered what your favorite side dish says about you? If so, or even if not, I have you covered! Share this with your guests at this year’s holiday for a fun conversation at the dinner table.
So, at this year’s Thanksgiving holiday dinner, you can say, “Grandma, you are such a mashed potato!” Please don’t call your beloved grandmother a potato without her first reading this article. Happy holidays!

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
