Utah Driver Bails Out Of SUV Just Before It’s Hit By A Train
A Utah driver jumped out of their car seconds before it was hit by a train. It was an incredibly close call but they’re okay!
Getting stuck on a train track as a train is approaching is everyone’s nightmare. When that smashboard (I had to look up what the railroad crossing gate thing is called) goes down you want to make sure you’re on the correct side of it. You don’t want to get caught in the middle of two closed smashboards when a train is on its way. In the viral video, the person unfortunately gets stuck in that position and it looks like they were unable to back completely out of the way, realizing there was little they could do the driver gets out of the car and walks away leaving the SUV to get hit by a train at high speeds. Thankfully, they weren’t inside the car and were able to get out in time but you have to imagine that their insurance company is not going to like seeing this video of them leaving their car behind like that to get hit. Check out the viral video for yourself shared by Collin Rugg on X (formerly Twitter) below.

That was a close call! You definitely don’t want to find yourself in that position. However, it looks like they could have done more to get out of the way. If it’s me I’m continuing to drive forward! I don’t know why they turned around and started backing up–keep going! Get out of there! Or if you’re going to back up you have to keep backing up. I don’t care if I have to break the smashboards, I’m doing whatever I can. I don’t want to get hit and I don’t want my car to get destroyed either. There’s definitely more this driver could have done!
To make things even worse it appears to be a passenger train! They had to have been freaked out and scared when they saw that coming or heard the noise. I would not have wanted to be on that FrontRunner train because you wouldn’t know what just happened and that could be traumatic.
According to Indian Express, the incident happened in Layton, Utah which is just north of Salt Lake City. Indian Express reports that the crash caused extensive damage to the train and repairs will cost an estimated $100,000.
