Is Minnesota Making It Legal To Eat Beaver?
Is Minnesota making it legal to eat beaver? That’s the goal of Senator Grant Hauschild it sounds like!
Last year, the state of Minnesota passed a law making it illegal to eat nuisance beaver. However, now, Senator Grant Hauschild wants to make it legal to eat beaver again. He recently proposed a bill that would remove a line from a state statue that bars human consumption of a retained beaver, per FOX 9. I’ve never heard of anyone eating or being interested in eating beaver before. Those who have tried it, however, say it tastes a lot like beef. I was expecting chicken.
Minnesota Lawmaker Proposes Bill To Make It Legal To Eat Beaver
Beavers can be a problem when populations become too high. They can cut down trees and cause floods with their dams. One single beaver can reportedly cut down hundreds of trees every year. According to FOX 9, the DNR website explains, “Minnesota has a regulated beaver trapping season, but there are not enough trappers to keep some beaver populations small enough to prevent problems. Beavers are valuable, especially when considering their economic importance for fur. Minnesota trappers take 20,000 to 30,000 surplus beaver most years.”
While one senator is proposing making it legal to eat beaver again, others aren’t so sure about it. According to FOX 9, Senator Foung Hawj indicated that there are concerns about the potential for disease or parasite contraction from eating a rodent.
I have never thought about eating a beaver before. Never knew it was even an option. Those who have tried it compare it to gamey beef and say it’s “not terrible.” Would you be willing to give it a try?
