They say art is supposed to make you feel so I guess it accomplished its goal. However, you’d typically hope that feeling that you feel is happiness, sadness, euphoria, creativity, or something like that. You don’t want that feeling to be extreme nausea. Unfortunately, it sounds like that’s what happened here.
According to The Guardian, 18 theatregoers needed medical treatment for severe nausea after watching a performance that included live piercing, unsimulated sexual intercourse, and a lot of real and fake blood. It’s easy to understand how someone might end up feeling sick watching that. Especially if they didn’t see that coming or weren’t aware of what the show was going to be. There are rumors out there about Terrifier 3 having a similar effect on viewers in the audience.
Opera spokesperson Sebastian Ebling says, “On Saturday we had 8 and on Sunday we had 10 people who had t be looked after by our visitor service,” via The Guardian. The plan in question was Sancta which is a work by Austrian choreographer Florentina Holzinger. It sounds like Holzinger is known for these types of performances that blur the line between dance theatre and vaudeville. It’s an all-female cast and they usually perform fully or partially naked. There are usually some extreme stunts involved like sword-swallowing, tattooing, and even stuff like masturbating and painting with blood. It’s clearly not for the faint of heart.
However, it doesn’t appear that these medical cases are keeping people away. All the remaining shows reportedly have sold out! People are coming back for more! Hey, whatever you’re into I guess. To each their own. Ebling says, “We recommend that all audience members once again very carefully read the warnings so they know what to expect,” per The Guardian. Those warnings include potential triggers for incense, loud noises, and explicit sexual acts and sexual violence.
