MovieScent Will Release Smells That Sync To What You’re Watching
MovieScent is a new technology that will release smells that sync to what you’re watching. If you’ve ever wanted to smell what you’re watching this is for you!
Will this be the next big thing in entertainment or will it fall flat? In a way, it’s like bringing Smell-O-Rama into 2024. Instead of scratch and sniff snickers to correlate with what you’re watching, this device will release the scents on its own! However, not everyone is pumped about it.
MovieScent Will Release Smells That Sync To What You’re Watching
Adding the sense of smell to entertainment, is far from a new attempt. many attempts were made over the decades but rarely had much success. Smell-O-Vision was disappointing back in the 1960s and was even included on a list of the Top 100 Worst Ideas Of The 20th Century, per Time.
Recently, according to SlashFilm, filmmakers like John Waters and Robert Rodriguez have gotten behind the idea of incorporating smell into the movie watching experience and have given out scratch-and-sniff cards to audiences in the theatre. Regals 4DX system even utilizes a smell component, per SlashFilm. Now, for the first time ever, Elevated Perceptions is looking to bring the idea into your home with MovieScent.
According to SlashFilm, MovieScent “releases real-time scents based on events and environments withing movies, TV shows, televised sporting events and streams.” Some of the scents will include fresh cut grass, ocean, restaurant, forest, and storm. So, it sounds like they aren’t getting too micro with it instead of sticking with more generic scents, although they are familiar and I can see them lending some assistance to helping you feel as if you’re in the movie and a part of what you’re watching.
The product will begin shipping next month for $179.99 but if you buy it before September 30th, you can score a discounted price of $149.99. More scents are expected to become available soon like fire, jungle, zombie, new car, and blood. SlashFilm reports that 40 additional scents are set to come out over the next few months. Do you think this would be a cool addition that would enhance your viewing experience? I feel like it would depend on how strong and accurate the scent is. If it’s too generic I don’t see it working, as much as I would want it to. At least until there’s a scene at a garbage dump, or something. You can watch a YouTube video about MovieScent below.
