Midnight Metal: Who’s the Top Metal Drummer?
As I’m going to talk about on an upcoming episode of Midnight Meal, I have to say that when it comes to metal drummers, there are a lot of great ones. It’s really hard to pinpoint a greatest metal drummer of all time. I, personally, don’t get all the hate for Lars Ulrich of Metallica. I think he’s a good drummer. He’s the drummer of one of the biggest metal bands in the world. How could he not be solid? So, who’s the top metal drummer? It’s a complex question with lots of different answers and opinions.
When it comes to general drummers, Rolling Stone lists John Bonham of Led Zeppelin as the greatest drummer of all time. “On the very first cut of the very first Led Zeppelin LP, John Bonham changed rock drumming forever,” they state. I can’t disagree. Drummagazine.com lists Mike Portnoy as their No. 1 pick for best drummers of all time. Audio Ink has Lars Ulrich of Metallica as No. 1 for best heavy metal drummer. MusicRadar.com has Neil Peart of Rush at the top of their list. “There’s never been a band quite like Rush, and there’s certainly never been a drummer quite like Neil Peart. Consider the reasoning and it’s clear to see why you have voted the Rush drummer as the definitive GOAT,” they state. While that’s very true, I wouldn’t consider Rush a heavy metal band, so not sure if that applies for the topic at hand.
Who’s the Top Metal Drummer?
A few under-the-radar drummers that come to mind are Mario Duplantier of Gojira and the late Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold. But, really, there are so many underappreciated metal drummers. Who do you think is the best metal drummer? Reach out to us on social media and let us know your thoughts. ~Anne
