A Florida woman has been arrested after being accused of stealing money from a small business she worked at. It goes to show you have to be careful who you trust!
It seems like crimes are often committed by those closest to you. Unfortunately, this small business learned that the hard way. It all happened at a butchery in Bradenton, Florida. Read more and check out her mugshot below.
Florida Woman Accused Of Stealing Money From Where She Worked
According to FOX 13 News, Felicia Stivers, 51, of Arcadia, has been arrested and charged with scheme to defraud $50,000 or more after she reportedly stole money from the Chop Shop in several transactions over a two-week period. The Chop Shop is a grocery and butcher shop in Bradenton.
Not only is it an incredibly bold and not wise decision to steal from your employer, but she went about it in a way that I’ve never heard of. FOX 13 News reports that another employee at the Chop Shop contacted police regarding a suspicious situation at their place of work. FOX 13 News says the employee claimed Stivers had been stealing from the store by performing cash reserves through the register and stealing money from the reverses. That employee estimates the store could have lost somewhere between $150,000 to $300,000, per FOX 13 News. That’s some serious cash and a loss that would certainly be noticed. That’s definitely not an accidental rounding error.
Honestly, I have never heard of register reverses. I have very little experience working a cash register and haven’t heard of this scam. However, FOX 13 News reports that Stivers had been granted a large amount of trust by the Chop Shop due to her experience with a cash register and she was trusted with payroll, bank runs, and cash reverses. Something I’m unfamiliar with and something she should not have been trusted with, it sounds like.
How Did She Steal From Register Reserve Transactions?
So, how did she pull it off? Maybe you’re unfamiliar with the process like I am. According to FOX 13 News, the employee explained that at the end of each business day, the cashier would take a pile of cash payment receipts from said day, count them, and then match them to the end-of-day money. That’s all how it’s supposed to go. However, she alleges that Stivers did it differently. The employee tells FOX 13 News that Stivers would go through the receipts and select certain receipts and remove them from the box before taking them to a different register to perform a cash transaction reverse to appear like the transaction never happened. Instead, they allege she would keep the money, per FOX 13 News.
Eventually, surveillance helped show what happened and Stivers admitted to stealing some money from the small business. However, she has pleaded not guilty to her charges of scheme to defraud $50,000 or more.
