The American Music Awards (the award statue that was named “Most Likely to Accidentally Impale a Musician”) announced their 2019 nominees, and as with most mainstream awards shows, rock fans will likely be annoyed.
The rock genre is represented in the “Pop/Rock” categories, which is just dandy, but why on Earth call the categories below “Pop/Rock” if you’re just going to ignore the rock part! Look at the artists in these categories: Drake, Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, BTS, Jonas Brothers, Lil Nas X. The only acts that come close to being “rock” are Panic! At The Disco and Imagine Dragons, and that’s being generous to the point it borders on absurd.
And I don’t care how many legends Post Malone performs/collaborates with, he’s not rock. Jamming with Aerosmith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and getting Ozzy Osbourne to guest on a track is all fine and good, but you are still not rock. Post Malone could dig up Jim Morrison from Père Lachaise in Paris, put him on wires like a marionette and doing a rousing rendition of “Light My Fire,” and he would still not be rock.
However, if Post Malone, who leads artists in AMA nominations, does attempt this, I would tune into the November 24 broadcast on ABC. It would literally be the only reason rock fans would do so.
