Movies are a fantastic way to pass the time. Especially on a nasty spring day in Michigan. The day that just nonstop pours rain for ten hours with the grayest skies. Some people read; others watch TV. I love watching Movies on days like this. The vast majority of movies have a villain. Some movie villains stand out amongst the rest.

Of course, most movies have a conflict that often features an antagonist—commonly known as “the bad guy.” Other movies have a concept or theme that may act as a conflict. A film about how a man or woman struggles with addiction, for instance, is unlikely to feature a Darth Vader-type villain. However, there are so many movie villains in the vast world of cinema. Some are fallen heroes like Darth Vader, Two-Face, Doc Oc in Spider-Man 2, Magneto, and Saruman from Lord of the Rings. The list goes on and on. Sometimes, it seems that the greatest movie villains were once heroes.

The Greatest Movie Villains

Some of my all-time favorite movies are favorites because they either feature an unbelievable conflict or a fantastic villain. In Star Wars, Darth Vader is an iconic villain; not only is the lore of The Dark Side beneficial in making him who he is. Being that Vader is fueled by hatred and that hatred only makes him stronger is purely terrifying when you think about it. It’s one of the many reasons he’s among the greatest movie villains ever. I was looking for something to watch this weekend. Check these movies out!

• Count Dracula

  Count Dracula is one of the most iconic movie villains in history. The first time Dracula appeared on the big screen was back in 1931. Of course, the novel written by Bram Stoker came several decades before that in 1897. Dracula is such a great movie villain for a few reasons, not only is he one of the most well know villains ever made. He is a blood sucking vampire! Plus, in certain renditions of the character he is more of a
  terrifying anti-hero instead of a villain. However, anyone who drains the blood of people and slaughters many cannot be considered a hero.

   

   

• Freddy Krueger

  Freddy Krueger is a horrifying villain who is extremely unique. If you haven’t watched Nightmare On Elm Street and love horror, put it on the list. Krueger is a murdered child rapist who holds no remorse for his actions. The evil entity that is left after his mortal self was killed is unhinged. He kills entire towns of kids through their dreams. The scariest part is, everybody sleeps so in a sense there is no escape…

• Thanos

  Thanos is an incredible movie villain. You know the villain is good when you hate his guts while watching the film. Thanos is super powerful and has a quest for reducing the population of the universe no matter the cost. The defining trait that makes him one of the greatest is that he does so indiscriminately. There are no favorites, he wipes out half of every world he goes to without choosing his victims so to speak.

   

• Michael Myers

  Michael Myers deserves a spot on this list for a few reasons. He is a deranged killer like many others, yes. But Myers is a bit different than other famous slasher villains such as Jason Vorhees from Friday The 13th. Myers for some reason never truly dies. In a way he simply cannot be defeated. Over all the movies he has become an evil force as opposed to an actual man in the flesh. While Jason Vorhees lacks the depth to his anger. Michael Myers was born evil. He is more of a terrifying representation of what a serial killer is.

   

   

• Lord Voldemort

  Lord Voldemort is an amazing movie villain. From a character standpoint he is a perfect enemy of the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Throughout the movies you can always identify the fear that even his name invokes in people. Similar to the likes of “Darth Vader” his name instills fear. When he finally does appear in his full powered form in the movies, he does not disappoint. Voldemort is truly one of the best movie villains ever.

   

   

• Darth Vader

  Darth Vader to me has to be one of greatest movie villains of all time. A perfect blend of power and terror, he’s not just scary because he’s powerful. He’s scary because he’s scary. His power is fueled by his hatred and for that reason he is my 2nd all-time movie villain. Find out who the number 1 all-time villain is below!

   

   

• The Joker

  The Joker played by Heath Ledger to me is the greatest movie villain of all-time. Not because he is the most powerful villain, since he certainly is not. But because he is the most unhinged and truly only lives to see everything burn. His character in the film “The Dark Knight” is truly chilling and he is a master manipulator of his surroundings and the people within them. Preying on the weak and using the strong to kill the strong. He is a vile man who is the very definition of term villain.
