We tend to get some violent storms that rip through the Motor City and knock the power out. I look at it as if we’re living in the old times, you know, before the Internet existed. Fortunately, we live in the era of data, and even if the power is out, you can still pull up Netflix or Hulu on your phone and stream your favorite show. Unlimited data is a beautiful thing. However, there are still these things that exist called “dead zones,” and if you’re like me, you live in one. That’s right, I live in a dead zone. I have no signal in my house without Wi-Fi. That means when I cut cable and went to strictly streaming, I couldn’t get our local channels 2, 4 and 7 without having an antenna. Yep, I’m still that person rocking the rabbit ears. Actually, I’m rocking an indoor/outdoor Marathon monstrosity, and I still have issues getting the local channels, but I digress. I tried to stream Netflix, but the show would buffer every four seconds and not only is that annoying, my impatient ass couldn’t handle it.

The minutes went by, then hours and now I’m sending my dad to my house to grab all my frozen food out of the freezer. So, what have I been up to the last 18 hours in my solitude? A lot of wondering around my house so I came up with some things to do when the power is out:

  • 1. Take A Walk

Once the storm clears, go for a walk. The air is quite refreshing after a good rain.

  • 2. Play A Board Game

Remember board games? Pull out Monopoly and engage in a friendly battle of property and being sent to jail. What could go wrong with everyone on edge, not being able to check their latest Instagram post?

  • 3. Organize That Office Which You've Been Putting Off

I do have a high power battery charged light that will basically light an entire room. No better time than when you aren’t distracted by arguments on Twitter between people you’ve never met to get reorganized!

  • 4. Go To The Bar

I’d be willing to bet that even if the power is out in your town, the neighboring town has power, a cold drink and ESPN The Ocho at your disposal.

  • 5. Call Someone You Haven't Talked To In A While

It’s the 2020’s and everyone LOVES a good phone call. Call up that friend you haven’t seen since the pandemic started and tell them every mundane moment of your power outage. They’ll be thrilled to hear from you!

  • 6. Stare At The Wall

I have spent a good portion of this power outage staring out the window. Then, when it got dark out, Miss Karl and I stared at the wall. We talked for a little bit, but she’s not a great conversationalist.
