According to People, home plate umpire Korey Pontbriand was hit in the throat by a baseball but opted to deal with the pain and stay in the game. However, a mom who was watching her son’s game noticed something wasn’t right with the umpire. That’s when Dr. Jennifer LaFemina took action. She saw some concerning behavior and started talking to him between innings to see how he was doing. Finally, she was able to convince him to leave the game in the 6th inning and he collapsed, per People.
LaFemina provided medical care along with her medical assistant, Emily Lutfy, who attend every game together. Pontbriand was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries where he received test and treatment and is now stable and breathing on his own, per People. It’s a good thing LaFemina, a surgical oncologist with UMass Memorial Health, was on site and paying attention. Otherwise, things could have ended much differently.
Yes, she missed her son score the winning run in the game. However, it was all worth it. She was in attendance and able to watch them win the tournament the following day, according to People.
