Meltdown: From interviewing Robert, to seeing the guys take the stage for the very first time to the classic Metallica cuts, it was an overall great weekend. I knew it was going to crush, but I think it exceeded my expectations. The Blackened tasting was fun. Master distiller Rob Dietrich does a great job explaining the process. Also, I can't recall a concert where so many WRIF listeners came up to say "hello." It happened all weekend. Thank you!
Jade: What a rockin' weekend in Detroit for Metallica! It’s definitely hard to pick one favorite moment after three days of rock n' roll. I had friends from all over Michigan and Ohio who came into town for this, so it was really great to see everyone in one place for such an iconic band. I was able to bring my older brother to both shows, so that was special. He’s been a Metallica fan for as long as I can remember, so it was fun to be there with him. We also got to attend the Blackened Whiskey Tasting Party where Rob Dietrich shared the method to making Metallica’s Blackened Whiskey. Turns out they play Metallica for the barrels to give it something special, which is really cool. Overall, the entire weekend was a blast, and I'm so happy I got to spend it with so many people that I love.
Aimee Brooks: First favorite moment was seeing my mom experience Pantera live for the first time (loved them). Also, the Dime/Vinnie tribute on the drum kit. And, Metallica! Especially, the Orion Live/Cliff tribute.
Cort Freeman: This was my first time seeing Metallica. I was blown away by their energy. It was nonstop. My favorite part was seeing how passionate the crowd was at the shows. There were a handful of grown men crying around me, because they were so excited to see Metallica.
Jonel Jaksa: My favorite moment was just being there Friday night. I only wish I would've tried to go Sunday, as well. I have been a Metallica fan since "Master of Puppets" came out, and I've never seen them live. Not once in darn near 40 years. They're one of the few bands I somehow repeatedly missed over the years, and I'm glad to finally say I've seen the mighty Metallica live. Hearing Pantera live again was the cherry on top.
Anne Erickson: Everything! I've seen Metallica several times before, and this was by far the best show I've seen of these guys. They are always great, but this show had something special. They were tight, passionate and filled the huge venue with so much energy and metal mayhem. It was truly a special weekend. I can totally see why fans have been saying they love this tour. Check out photos from the weekend below.
Metallica; two nights, four different openers, one weekend Detroit never forget.
Opening with "Whiplash" and ripping through hits, non-hits, deep cuts, and wrapping up with "One" and "Enter Sandman". The guys made Detroit their home for the last several days, ending with two packed shows at Ford Field.
Here are some pictures WRIF photographer Will Spurrier took to cap off a weekend of controlled chaos. The Metallica boys know how to do it up right. From the stage setup to the setlists to the fan experiences and the Blackened Whiskey tasting and bottle signings. I even met a member of the band Damage Inc., who traveled with the entire tour and played the Saturday nights at each stop with two other tribute bands.
One thing that I wasn't sure I was going to like is how the band takes the stage each night. I guess I'm old-school in that way. I don't want to see the band until they appear on stage. I'd seen all sorts of videos from other shows with the guys just there, hanging among the fans. Well, after seeing them come out of the backstage area, in full view of the crowd, hang during AC/DC's "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Want To Rock 'N Roll)", and then through their intro with the "Ecstasy Of Gold", I get it now. It's another thing they do that other bands don't or simply can't. As with their music, they're not afraid to do things out of the ordinary. As they're waiting to go on stage, it's almost like they're part of the crowd waiting for it to begin with the rest of us....but they're bringing the thunder!
In closing, just a personal thing from me. A big Thank You to every person who stopped me to say Hello, fist bump, shake hands, or yell MELTDOWN from across the corridor. You guys are appreciated. I'm glad we got to spend this weekend together!
