Snoop Dogg Recalls Being ‘Checked’ By Dionne Warwick
During Snoop Dogg’s appearance in Dionne Warwick’s documentary Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over, the rapper recalled a time when he and other rappers were “checked” by the iconic singer.
According to CNN, the conversation between Snoop and Warwick happened early in his career. She was not pleased with the use of misogynistic lyrics in his songs. Warwick invited Snoop, Suge Knight, and other rappers over to her house to address the situation. She gave the rappers a 7 am “call time” and Snoop admitted he was there promptly at 6:52 am with the other rappers in her driveway. The “Gin & Juice” rapper said they “were kind of like scared and shook up.”
During their meeting, Warwick asked the rappers to call her a “bitch” to her face since they used the term in their songs. “You guys are all going to grow up. You’re going have families. You’re going to have children. You’re going to have little girls and one day that little girl is going to look at you and say, ‘Daddy, did you really say that? Is that really you?’ What are you going to say?” the singer said.
Warwick later added, “These kids are expressing themselves, which they’re entitled to do. However, there’s a way to do it.”
“She was checking me at a time when I thought we couldn’t be checked,” Snoop added. “We were the most gangsta as you could be but that day at Dionne Warwick’s house, I believe we got out-gangstered.” Snoop decided that after that meeting he would revise the tone of Tha Doggfather. “I made it a point to put records of joy – me uplifting everybody and nobody dying and everybody living.”
“We’re powerful right now, but she’s been powerful forever. Thirty-some years in the game, in the big home with a lot of money and success,” Snoop continued. “Dionne, I hope I became the jewel that you saw when I was the little, dirty rock that was in your house. I hope I’m making you proud.”
