Norm Macdonald’s 1998 ESPYs Monologue Was a Game-Changer
Norm Macdonald passed away Tuesday (Sept. 14) at 61. Pretty much everyone I know is bummed about it.
Macdonald fans will remember his famed opening monologue at the 1998 ESPY Awards, where he made fun of some pro athletes that just didn’t expect it. They didn’t care for it much, either. Watch the monologue below.
After that, producers didn’t seem to want a comedian to host the show again. It took them years to finally book another comedian!
What’s your favorite Macdonald moment?
Anne Erickson started her radio career shortly after graduating from Michigan State University and has worked on-air in Detroit, Flint, Toledo, Lansing and beyond. As someone who absolutely loves rock, metal and alt music, she instantly fell in love with radio and hasn’t looked back. When she’s not working, Anne makes her own music with her band, Upon Wings, and she also loves cheering on her favorite Detroit and Michigan sports teams, especially Lions and MSU football. Anne is also an award-winning journalist, and her byline has run in a variety of national publications. You can also hear her weekends on WRIF.
