WRIF first started broadcasting true rock ‘n’ roll to the Motor City on On Feb. 14, 1971, and we’ve never looked back!

It’s been an honor to rock with you for the past 50 years, and we look forward to the next 50.

Let’s look back on these chief events and happenings in Detroit and around the world in the year 1999!

  • In April, The Red Wings finished first in the Central Division.

  • In May, The Pistons finished third in the Central Division.

  • Grant Hill was picked for the 1999 NBA All-Star Game.

  • In September, The Tigers played their final baseball game in Tiger Stadium.

  • In September, The Tigers finished in third place.

  • Going into January, The Lions qualified for the playoffs and finished third in NFC Central Division.

  • In February, the impeachment of Bill Clinton in the Congress took place. He was acquitted by the Senate.

  • In March, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the murder convictions of Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber.

  • The euro officially became the currency for 12 European nations.

  • Basketball great Michael Jordan announced that he was retiring from the NBA.

  • In March, the Roth IRA was introduced by Senator William V. Roth Jr.
