WRIF first started broadcasting true rock ‘n’ roll to the Motor City on On Feb. 14, 1971, and we’ve never looked back!
It’s been an honor to rock with you for the past 50 years, and we look forward to the next 50.
Let’s look back on these major events and milestones in Detroit and around the world in the year 1996!

In November, Michigan voted to approve the operation of three casinos in Detroit.

In April, the Pistons lost in the playoffs with a 46–36 record.

In April, The Red Wings had a great season with a 62–13–7 record, but lost right before the Stanley Cup finals.

In December, the Lions finished 5th in the NFC Central Division with a 5–11 record.

The 1996 Grammy for Record of the Year went to “Kiss From a Rose” by Seal.

The 1996 Grammy for Album of the Year went to “Jagged Little Pill” by Alanis Morissette.

Some of the most popular toys from 1996 included Marvel Super Heroes Collector Pack, John Deere Farm Set, Gymnast Stacie Doll and 1996 Nascar Collector’s Set.

Popular movies from 1996 included “Independence Day,” “Twister,” “Mission: Impossible” and “Jerry Maguire.”

Famous birthdays from 1996 include Tom Holland on June 1 and Zendaya on Sept. 1.
Anne Erickson started her radio career shortly after graduating from Michigan State University and has worked on-air in Detroit, Flint, Toledo, Lansing and beyond. As someone who absolutely loves rock, metal and alt music, she instantly fell in love with radio and hasn’t looked back. When she’s not working, Anne makes her own music with her band, Upon Wings, and she also loves cheering on her favorite Detroit and Michigan sports teams, especially Lions and MSU football.
