Jonel was a journalism major who went to Specs Howard School of Media Arts hoping it would help him get a job writing for radio or television. He was pleasantly surprised to find that being “on-air” was not only a blast, but it came pretty naturally to him.
After graduating Specs with honors, he began his radio career at a small group of stations in Port Huron, MI where he worked his way up the ranks to the afternoon drive-time shift. After four years on-air in the Blue Water Area, Jonel landed a gig with a group of Detroit stations where he spent most of his time there working behind the scenes, producing radio station imaging and client commercials. He did get to keep his on-air chops up doing traffic reports for several Detroit stations and co-hosting a talk show about pro wrestling on sports talk radio. After his stint with those Detroit stations came to an end, Jonel found himself back in Port Huron as part of an award-winning morning show team.
In 2016, he got the opportunity he’d hoped for his entire career. A spot at WRIF as part-time air talent and studio board operator for all of WRIF’s great jocks when they’re out broadcasting live all over Detroit. He also does on-air shifts on WRIF’s HD radio station, Riff2, and hosts a local music show on that station featuring artists and bands from all over the state of Michigan.
Personally, Jonel is Michigan through and through. Born in Detroit, he was raised in Sterling Heights, has lived in Shelby Township, New Baltimore and Farmington Hills, and now resides in Northville. He has a young son who shares his love for pro wrestling and Star Wars. He’s a soccer fan and loves all of Detroit’s sports teams, in good and bad times. He’s an avid music fan who listens to just about every genre but has a soft spot in his heart for 80s arena rock/hair metal.
