Elton John is one of the most significant musical artists in the past century, and he’s bringing all of it to a close on his current farewell tour. The trek rolled through Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, on Monday (July 18) for what will be his final concert ever in Michigan.

The show was part of the final dates of Sir John’s farewell tour, which has him performing at more than two dozen stadiums in North America and Europe. Regarding the final run, John previously stated, “I’m going to go out in the biggest possible way, performing at my very best, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had, playing in places that have meant so much to me throughout my career,” John said of his final tour.”

This wasn’t John’s first time in Michigan on his farewell tour. He performed April 5 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, as well as Feb. 8 and 9 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Even with those previous stops, this was John’s only show of the farewell tour performing outside in Michigan, and something about the outdoor setting made it an extra special night.

John performed song after song of his greatest hits, kicking off the night at 8 p.m., with no opening act. The crowd was mesmerized from the moment he hit the stage, and John kept them in the palm of his hand from the beginning of the set to his final encore. It’s why they call him one of the greatest. At the end of the show, he was lifted onto a high platform until he disappeared into the sky- a signature of his current tour.
