Robert Jon & The Wreck are coming to Detroit for the first time. The band’s been around since 2011, and have played in Michigan, but never on our side of the state. That changes on Friday, December 8th when they’ll play a show at the Token Lounge.
Robert Jon Burrison recently joined me to talk about the band, whiskey, playing with some incredible musicians, his beard and more. 🙂
On Robert’s bio, it spoke to how his musical roots go back to Motown. The band is from Southern California, but they sound like a band from the south. “We grew up listening to everything across the board, not just what was in our town” is how he responded to the question of how they got their sound.
One of the guys he said he talked to about songwriting is Jay Buchanan from the Rival Sons. He encouraged Robert to keep writing. “We have an arsenal of songs that have been recorded that aren’t out yet”. That drops next year. You can hear the new song “Help Yourself” below. He spoke to the quirky feel of the video as well.
What about the name of the band? Robert explained that they had some other names, but they settled on The Wreck, as he put it “Back in the day it all made sense, because we were all drinking a lot”.
He also told me about writing with Black Berry Smoke’s Charlie Starr. They wrote the song “Pain No More” which you can check out below. The band have played and are playing some shows with BBS coming up.
The band is on Joe Bonamassa’s record label, as Robert told me about working with the blues legend. “He’s a monster on the instrument. He’s the best of the best.”
Add some whiskey talk and the interview was complete! Thanks to Robert for the time, we’ll see you Friday night at the Token Lounge!
