It's been about a year since I've talked with Karen Newman, so I thought we'd have her back on to talk about everything she's doing leading up to Christmas, and about her vast career.

We talked about singing the national anthem for the Red Wings and how that started. She went through the entire process step by step on how she got the job, as well as what she went through each day preparing to sing. She spoke to her relationship with some of the players over the years. "They were really great. Some of the nicest athletes I've ever met in my life."

Did you know she toured and sang backup vocals with Bob Seger and Kid Rock? She did. As Karen said, "I owe it all to Alto Reed." She was singing and touring with Seger while the Wings were on fire in 1996! She talks about life on the road with both of those legendary Detroit performers. It was very interesting to her about her experiences of traveling the country with both of these bands. "Working for Kid Rock was really excellent" she said. "I loved being on stage with him!" Incredible!

She talked about the Christmas shows she'll be doing, plus, a TV special on Christmas Eve on WDIV channel 4 here in Detroit. My DVR is already set for that one!

You can see her perform her Motor City Christmas with Michael King at the Roxy in Rochester on Saturday, December 9th.

She'll then play the Andiamo Showroom on Sunday, December 17th. Tickets can be purchased at andiamoshowroom.com on Ticketmaster* or by calling the Andiamo Box Office at 586-268-3200. *Service fees will apply.

Get a look at some photos of her visit, and watch our conversation below.

Thank you, Karen!!

Karen out and and about in south lyon earlier in the year

In our conversation we talked about the last time we saw each other in person. It was behind the South Lyon Hotel and my friends and me were out riding our Harleys. Karen talked about how much she loves small towns like that one.

Meltdown started on the mighty WRIF on the evening of Halloween, 1995. Technically, his first on-air shift was the morning of November 1st. Moving to the Motor City from Buffalo, N.Y., he has built a career and family. Over his almost three-decade stint at RIFF, he's had the privilege to work with some of the biggest personalities in Detroit radio history. He boasts of being just the second-afternoon drive jock in the station's illustrious 53-year history. Along with his love for rock music and attending concerts, he's also an avid Harley-Davidson enthusiast and hockey player. He plays year-round and manages to squeeze in a few charity games throughout the year. Meltdown writes about the Detroit Red Wings, rock music, and Detroit concert venues.
