It’s been about a year since I’ve talked with Karen Newman, so I thought we’d have her back on to talk about everything she’s doing leading up to Christmas, and about her vast career.
We talked about singing the national anthem for the Red Wings and how that started. She went through the entire process step by step on how she got the job, as well as what she went through each day preparing to sing. She spoke to her relationship with some of the players over the years. “They were really great. Some of the nicest athletes I’ve ever met in my life.”
Did you know she toured and sang backup vocals with Bob Seger and Kid Rock? She did. As Karen said, “I owe it all to Alto Reed.” She was singing and touring with Seger while the Wings were on fire in 1996! She talks about life on the road with both of those legendary Detroit performers. It was very interesting to her about her experiences of traveling the country with both of these bands. “Working for Kid Rock was really excellent” she said. “I loved being on stage with him!” Incredible!
She talked about the Christmas shows she’ll be doing, plus, a TV special on Christmas Eve on WDIV channel 4 here in Detroit. My DVR is already set for that one!
You can see her perform her Motor City Christmas with Michael King at the Roxy in Rochester on Saturday, December 9th.
She’ll then play the Andiamo Showroom on Sunday, December 17th. Tickets can be purchased at andiamoshowroom.com on Ticketmaster* or by calling the Andiamo Box Office at 586-268-3200. *Service fees will apply.
