Playing hockey for Foundation 14.

If there’s one thing I love doing, it’s supporting the veterans of this great nation. Now throw in playing hockey to help a great cause and I’m definitely in! That’s what’s going to happen on March 23rd at the Taylor Sportsplex located at 13333 S. Telegraph rd. Taylor, MI. 48180. Doors open at 2:30.

Foundation 14 is an awesome charity started by Maria Caruso. It was established in 2016 to support veterans with PTSD and is hosting a charity hockey game, to raise money for local veterans. Faceoff For Freedom is the 2nd annual hockey game that the Foundation is hosting along with the Motor City Veterans Hockey Association.

According to the press release, joining the veteran hockey teams will be several of Detroit’s very own: former Detroit Red Wings Darren McCarty and Johnny Ogrodnick along with WRIF’s Meltdown who will lace up and skate on behalf of local veterans. As an exhibition game of friendly competition, these seasoned hockey players will be joined by the Belle Tire Girls Youth Hockey team who will do their part to make this event something for the entire family. Foundation 14 is committed to getting veterans riding motorcycles as therapy, but they are also about the community. So, admission is free. Raffles, apparel sales, and other activities will be held to raise funds.

All proceeds from this game will support local veterans through Foundation programs. Similar in their missions, both organizations provide therapy through activities that get veterans out and involved. When asked what inspired this event, Maria Caruso (Foundation 14’s President and Co-Founder) shared that it is “the camaraderie experienced between veterans, their families, and the community creates a much-needed outlet.” Established to raise awareness and advocacy for our veterans, these hard-working organizations made up of volunteers work hard to bring purpose back into the lives of our heroes.

“We are excited to once again be on the ice with Motor City, and to bring our veterans out with their families,” Caruso said. “This event kicks off our 8th year, and along with the other amazing organizations, we are seeing a true impact in the everyday lives of those who sacrificed for our country.”

See you guys on March 23rd in Taylor!

More on the cause below….

  • pictures from last year's faceoff for freedom

Last year’s game took place in Chelsea, MI. It was a snowy afternoon that made for a slippery drive to the rink, but the game was a lot of fun for everyone involved! Pictures here.

  • foundation 14 gives away a motorcycle

I was so proud to be a part of this event last summer. It took place at Artesian Wells in Brooklyn, MI. On a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon, a veteran was gifted a motorcycle. The whole afternoon was a fantastic event. Very emotional.

  • darren McCarty's Stanley Cup game winner

The legend of Darren McCarty goes deep in Hockeytown. Here’s one of his most famous, maybe the most famous goal of his legendary Red Wing career.

  • Johnny "O"

Here’s a little taste of what Johnny “O” is all about. With two stints on the Red Wings, he snipped 55 goals and 50 assists in 1984/85. A great guy, I play hockey with Johnny weekly in the morning skate we partake in.
