Having comedian/actor T.J. Miller in the studio was a blast. He’ll play shows all weekend at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak.
We talked about his comedy and his latest stand-up unique/album, Smooth Peanut Butter, which, by the way, he sells his brand at his shows. That’s part of his merch.
The hilarious conversation was wide-ranging, from things to see in Detroit to his wife, who grew up in Michigan, out by the speedway. He spoke of traveling the country and meeting people outside of the big cities on the coast. “You’re not interacting with the rest of the country,” he said of his friends in their ‘Hollywood bubble.’
Mysteries of where he lost his hat in the airport and how he cracked his phone were topics we covered, along with seeing comedy legend Dave Chappelle the night before in New York City. For my money, Dave’s last stand-up special was the funniest I’d ever seen. T.J. agreed, adding that the show he saw last night was better than Dreamer. He talked about the music he listens to and being a comedian. He said everyone associates you with feeling good when you’re a comedian. Makes sense to me.
He advised me about getting into comedy, which I’ve wanted to do for a long time. “Then you’ve got to down it!’ He went on to say, “Go and do it next week.”
One thing we didn’t talk much about was his vast movie and T.V. career. This conversation is mostly about comedy and his stand-up. I had to ask him about Steve Martin’s unique Let’s Get Small from the 70s. That’s one of his favorite specials. We talked about Eddie Murphy’s RAW as well.
Check out some pictures, his stand-up, and the interview below.
