The True Crime genre as a whole has exploded over the past few years. The fascination with the genre has developed a cult-like following. Although not as damaging to oneself as a cult may be. While crime TV shows have been widely popular for a considerably long period of time, the idea of watching true stories of horrifying crime wasn’t always the phenomenon it is today. Oftentimes it feels like there are too many options to choose from. When talking about horror movies, most people complain that it looks “too fake or isn’t scary”. This is part of the reason that true crime has thrived.

Over the years so many movies and TV shows have come out involving crime and detectives etc. One of the longest running and most successful TV shows of it’s time has been Law and Order. While Law and Order is not a true crime series, it is still within the crime genre and possesses a massive following of viewers and superfans. Other shows like NCIS, Criminal Minds, Breaking Bad, and many others have also enjoyed the success of the crime genre obsession. Interestingly enough, these shows paved the way for the explosion that is the true crime genre. Social media may have played a part in the dramatic rise in these crime shows.

True Crime is in High Demand

Another reason the genre may have become so popular is the vast quantity of streaming options that are now available. Every streaming source wants their own originals, therefore the need for more crime docs is at an all-time high. Shows like The Ted Bundy Tapes, Making a Murderer, or John Wayne Gacey: Devil in Disguise shocked viewers. Certain series were far more jaw dropping than others. I will break down the 6 most shocking shows that are either based on true crime or are documentaries. If you love the genre, these are all a must watch!

  • Dahmer

A shocking series that literally gave me chills on the first watch. 10/10 recommend if you love true crime.

  • Don’t F*ck With Cats

Contends with Jeffrey Dahmer himself in how messed up this show is. One of the most uniquely grotesque watches I have ever experienced.

  • Bad Sport (The Horse Killer Tommy Burns)

Downright shocking sports stories throughout the story. Specifically, the story on Tommy Burns and his involvement in the horse murder for insurance game.

  • The Torso Killer

A horrific documentary following the confessions of gruesome serial killer Richard Cottingham, decades after he had been incarcerated for a few =murders. He details many, many, others…

  • Night Stalker

Truly a nightmare of the dark. This one will make you think twice before turning off the lights at night.

  • Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez

Almost more tragic than horrific. One thing is for sure this is a very disturbing and unfortunate story.
