Batman the Dark Knight is amongst some of the best movie sequels ever.

The World of cinema is an amazing and intricate universe full of movies that have captivated people for generations. There are so many hit movies throughout several different genres. While it’s insanely difficult to make the perfect film, that is the ultimate goal. There are so many things that go into making a quality movie, and movie sequels are even harder.

The plot has to be captivating enough yet not overly complicated. There must be characters with substance, but they also can’t feel forced. Nowadays, movies are also widely judged for their use or misuse of diversity. It’s often a topic of contention. It’s great to offer representation and offer a wide range of characters. Yet, some films are often accused of trying too hard and losing out on the authentic feelings that quality acting and directors execute so well.

The Making of Good Movie Sequels

It’s for all these reasons and many others that it’s so difficult to craft the perfect movie. Only a handful of movies have sniffed perfection over the many years of cinema. At the same time, many people will certainly argue about which movies make that list. One thing is for certain: there are some exceptional films! Movies like The Godfather, Star Wars a New Hope, Jurassic Park, and others are widely beloved. Something that doesn’t get enough love is the art of making a great sequel.

Surprisingly enough, crafting the perfect sequel is one of the most challenging tasks. Over the years, there have been countless failed attempts at sequels. Movies that seemed like lazy cash grabs, others that completely disregarded original plot points, or overall, just made pathetic attempts to create an interesting sequel. In conclusion, it’s tough to make a sequel that’s worth watching.

Below, you will find the movie franchises that put hard work and effort into their sequels. For this list, we’re not necessarily going off of just which sequels earned the most money but truly analyzing some of the best sequels and why you should give them a chance! Keep scrolling to uncover which movies made the list of best sequels! If you’re a fan of sports movies, be sure to check out this list!

  • Batman The Dark Knight

It is one of the most amazing movies ever to grace the big screen. That’s not even mentioning that it is a sequel film to Batman Begins. The Dark Knight is the best sequel ever for a few reasons. This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. The plot is captivating and an overall thrill ride—a cunning film with sarcastic humor and insane plot twists that don’t disappoint. The acting is perhaps the greatest aspect of this film. The chilling display of detached emotion from Heath Ledger’s sinister take on the Joker does not go unnoticed. If you have a problem with this sequel being ranked higher than The Godfather Part II, watch it and return to this post. This sequel is one of the few that are truly better than the original.

  • Shrek 2

Shrek 2 is in the same class as “The Dark Knight.” Shrek is one of the best movies ever; Shrek 2 might be better. It’s as hilariously witty as the original, but it added magical twists and comedic turns perfectly to the brand. The movie kept the same energy and style as the original Shrek gave us, except Shrek 2 did it better. The ending of Shrek 2 is also one of the greatest endings in cinema history.

  • Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back

Still one of the most iconic movies ever made. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is a masterpiece sequel. It perfectly expanded upon “A New Hope” and gave fans a taste of something they had never seen before. Many movie fans have this film on their list of greatest movies ever. At the very least, it is one of the best Star Wars films. Ask any Star Wars fan if Empire Strikes Back was a great sequel, and you’ll find the answer is a resounding yes.

  • Avatar The Way of the Water

While this movie has been met with some controversy and mixed reviews, Avatar The Way Of The Water is among the other great sequels on the list. It’s yet another film that captured the same magic feelings that the original gave us while expanding the world meaningfully. This sequel absolutely crushed it at the box office, earning over $2.3 Billion worldwide.

  • The Lion King 2 Simba’s Pride

This one may come as a surprise to many, but it’s not that complicated. Fans may feel like it doesn’t live up to the hype of the original. However, that is both misleading and unrealistic. The original Lion King is among the greatest animated films of all time. The Lion King 2 is exceptional. The film is unique in its remarkable ability to follow a similar storyline to the original and excels at further expanding the world beyond Pride Rock. I found it incredible that both films follow a Shakespearian plot. The original is based on Hamlet, and the sequel is based on Romeo and Juliet.  Lastly, the musical number is truly outstanding. Many regard the original film’s soundtrack as one of the greatest ever, and the sequel is a spitting image. Go back and watch the movie and listen to the songs. They hit the mark beautifully. The Lion King 2 is truly an underrated film and a remarkable sequel that belongs on this list.
