I know, normally you come here for stories about rock bands, or my travels on my Harley, or whatever. Well, today is a special day and I didn’t want it to go unnoticed.
Let me introduce you to my friend, Kay, or has her grandkids call her “G-Nana”. She was born on August 16th, 1923. Yes, she turns 100 years young today!
As I was having cocktails with a friend the over the weekend, it struck me – you don’t just go around meeting 100 year olds every day! I mean, have you ever met someone who’s seen so much? I thought I’d turn the century spotlight on her to highlight the unbelievable life she’s had.
She moved to Detroit as a nine month old and lived at Lynch rd. and Mount Elliott. After graduating, she married in 1943 at the age of 20, when her husband came home from World War 2. He was injured during the war and received a Purple Heart. She found herself in New York City for the parade when the war ended. That wasn’t the last brush with war she’d have. Her son was in the Vietnam war. She said that was a little harder on her because it was being covered on the TV, unlike WW2.
What about her personally? She’s had odd jobs and then went to cosmetology school and became a beauty operator. Her favorite time of year is summer because it’s warm. Yes, we’ve sat on the front porch many times during the summer months. She doesn’t like beer or wine. Her favorite is Jack Daniel’s honey and ginger ale. My kind of woman!
To wrap it up, she said “Meltdown is a positive and good person, and my favorite DJ”. I guess you can’t argue with her on that! “I want to be remembered as a loving person and hope that everyone will love me as much as I love them.” That’s an easy order to follow.
G-Nana, wishing you the happiest of birthdays!! Here’s to 100 more!
