I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, so today before I came to work, I drove downtown to grab a few pictures of the progress on the construction of the Gordie Howe Bridge. I should’ve gotten some pictures from the Ambassador Bridge when I went over it last week. There, you can see the gap that remains as far as connecting Canada to the States. Tough to drive and snap pictures out of the car window, so I grabbed some from the location between Zug Island and Historic Fort Wayne this morning.
The construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is coming along nicely! After breaking ground in 2018, we are starting to see the fruits of its labor.
CBS News reports the bridge is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. According to CBS News, it will be the longest cable-stay system in all of North America.
Gordie Howe International Bridge
Over the last year, a lot of work was done on the bridge. It’s now expected to be completed on time by the end of the year. However, once the construction of the bridge is completed it will need the necessary signage, lights, and more added. That process is estimated to take an additional six months.
The bridge will provide Detroiters, and other travelers alike, with another alternative option to enter Canada. It should provide great benefits for communities on both sides of the river. It should assist in merging the two communities together.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, once the bridge is completed it will measure roughly 1.5 miles. It will also reportedly contain a walkway for pedestrians. In comparison, the Mackinac Bridge is nearly 5 miles long. So, it doesn’t come close to that. However, it’s certainly no small project!
I had to go see it for myself. Check out a photo gallery I put together at the site of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, from the Detroit perspective, below!
