Michigan Has One of the Most Dangerous Parks in America
We’re inching closer and closer to spring. In Michigan, that means it will soon be a great time to visit some of our great parks. Well, it’s not a list that we really want to be on. But, Michigan has one of the most dangerous parks in America. Let’s get into the statistics and why this particular park is reportedly so dangerous.
The new study comes from Kuhl.com, who notes that visiting parks is a very popular activity. “More than 300 million Americans visited our National Parks last year, and while this staggering number underscores their rising popularity, it also comes hand-in-hand with the possible risks involved,” they state. “But, how big of a risk is it?” So, Kuhl.com ran an “in-depth analysis” of America’s national parks to find the safest and “most dangerous” parks.
Before we get into Michigan, let’s look at the safest parks. Gateway Arch National Park in Missouri and Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona were No. 1 and No. 2 on the list, respectively. They were ranked as safe because of their “low numbers of missing persons and fatalities, minimal trail closures, and adequate ranger presence,” according to the study. The least safe parks were the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Wrangell-St. Elias in Alaska. That’s because of a larger “number of search and rescue missions, higher incidents of trail closures, and fatal incident rates.” Yikes.
So, which Michigan park is one of the most dangerous in America? It’s Isle Royale National Park. Of the spot, the article notes, “terrain hazards veiled by stunning scenery.” They also state that “rangers ensure the safety of 1,852 visitors.” So, before you cancel your plans to visit Isle Royale National Park, just remember to be careful.
