Will the Detroit Lions Extend Jared Goff’s Contract? New Insights
Jared Goff has become something of a non-hometown hero with the Detroit Lions. The Motor City loves him and everything he’s doing to try to bring a Super Bowl championship to a franchise that hasn’t come close. So, will the Detroit Lions extend Jared Goff’s contract? The Lions have currently signed Goff through the 2024 season, so it’s a hot question right now.
My belief is that, of course the Lions are going to resign Goff. He’s done nothing but prove himself over the past three years. If we lose him, he’ll definitely be lapped up by another team. We’re already likely going to lose some coaching staff to other NFL teams this season, so we can’t lose our star quarterback. But, what’s actually going to happen with Jared Goff’s contract? We have some new insight.
As mentioned, the Lions have signed Goff through the 2024 season. What’s more, the Detroit Lions drafted Hendon Hooker in the third round of the latest draft. But, while some thought that move might be to replace Goff, it doesn’t look that way. Goff’s agent Ryan Tollner tells The Athletic’s Kalyn Kahler that Goff, he believes, will get an extension early during the offseason. “They said all the right things to Jared and to me, that (this season) is not about him having to prove himself for another year,” Tollner said in the interview. “Inevitably, players always feel that way. If you don’t make a long-term commitment, then they feel like you don’t completely believe in them.”
So, while it’s not a big surprise that a quarterback’s agent would be optimistic about a resigning, it totally makes sense. Read more of The Athletic piece on Jared Goff here.
