The Best Detroit Style Pizza According To You
On Sunday, our Detroit Lions take on the Chicago Bears. I'm here to say, not only is our football team better than theirs, but Detroit style pizza is by far better than Chicago style pizza.
Chicago style pizza is just a casserole! That's all there really is to it. In fact, we aren't the only ones who know this to be true. Ask any resident in Chicago, they hate that traditional Chicago style pizza just like we do.
Pizza Battle: Detroit vs. Chicago
Here in Detroit, we have tons of pride in all things Made In Michigan. We love our Faygo pop, Better Made Potato Chips, and Big Three automakers. Additionally, we love our style of pizza. The Detroit style deep dish is without a doubt the best in the country. I understand I may be bias, but all bias aside...it's the best. Thick and crispy, but not overwhelming.
In Chicago, they don't share our same pride in all things local. They hate their Chicago style pizza. Residents of Chicago don't even claim it as their own, and will tell you it's only for tourists. It's true. Chicago locals actually prefer the tavern style pizza that's cut into squares instead of triangular slices. Don't get me started on how horrible that style of pizza is. Majority of the "slices" (if you can even call them that) don't even have any crust! Or, if you are able to snag a piece with crust before your friends, it's likely all crust! Ugh.
National Detroit Style Pizza Day is June 23rd. I'm a HUGE fan of this kind of pizza. First off, I love the crust. I like it burnt slightly, which is probably in the recipe. Being that I like the crust, it's also a plus that it's square. I always go for the corners first....it's a must!
I asked you guys what pizza places made the best Detroit Style Pizza and we'll get to what you said, but first I'll answer the question - what is Detroit Style pizza? According to the Wikipedia: Detroit-style pizza is a deep-dish rectangular pizza topped with Wisconsin brick cheese and a cooked tomato-based sauce. Personally, I like mine with pepperoni and mushrooms.
Let's see what you guys had to say.
CJ's in U.S.A. Arena in Plymouth
Ok, this is one of my faves - outside of Buddy's, but we'll get to that later. You can usually find me there on Wednesday nights for $6 pizza night. The Detroit Style Pizza is a little more for a whole $8, so it's a great deal for a decent pizza! Add on a movie in their parking lot drive-in, you have a winner!
Pizza Papalis
Jason Wright agrees "Pizza Papalis or Bubi's." Terry Cullum on Facebook picked this pizza place as well.

Cloverleaf Pizza
This place got a lot of votes. I have to get there to give it a try!
Free Press columnist Neal Rubin said "Cloverleaf. Buddy’s is stellar, but Cloverleaf feels personal"
Donna Epler on Facebook agreed, as did Rich Demucha "Loui's and Cloverleaf. The crust, the sauce. those two ingredients are key to a good pizza. It Has to be crunchy on the outside soft on the inside and the sauce has to be garlicky."
Mike Sun and Ron Upleger on Facebook also like Cloverleaf. "Cloverleaf is pretty awesome!"
John Haladye on Facebook posted this "I grew up on the Eastside, so Cloverleaf was the best."
Loui's in Hazel Park
Another one with a lot of love from you guys.
From David Gravel on Twitter "Loui's in Hazel Park. Now the question. Do I make my own or order one Friday?" Great question!
Reggie Gesaman on Facebook said "Loui's in Hazel Park has it on lock!"
Dave on Twitter added "Loui's in Hazel Park. The restaurant has old school vibes inside and the pizza has a buttery like crust and some thicc cheese! I usually eat 2 slices and go into a coma (in the best way)."
Said @mich1gander on Twitter "Loui’s in Hazel Park."
Scott Snitkowski on Facebook added his opinion. "Loui’s, like Buddy’s w/ better sauce."
Buddy's Pizza
I mean, it's tough to top Buddy's....they even told me on Twitter. "We may be biased but nothing ever compares to The Original😉" A lot of you agreed.
Kevin Zink on Facebook "I dig the original Buddy’s location."
Mind Czar on FB chimed in "Original Buddy’s (it’s the pans), and Louie’s in Hazeltucky!"
@ReneeArmas said "....is the best! Delicious crust with the perfect crispy cheese edge, and their house made vinaigrette on the antipasto salad is the perfect accompaniment. Have to go there every time I go home to Michigan for a visit!"
Terri Farmer on Facebook chimed in with this comment "Buddy’s Pizza, the sauce is excellent, the cheese, the crust & then throw in their antipasto salad, just absolutely delicious, hard to beat Buddy’s in my opinion."
Tony Ortiz @ajotiz3 said "Buddy's. The sauce, cheese and the pepperoni are top-notch and the crunchy corner pieces are the best."
Jim Matti on Facebook "I haven't had a bad Buddy's pizza."
Also on Facebook Robby Sturr said "I'm not a big pizza guy, but for me it will always be Buddy's."
That's just a taste of love Buddy's got online.
