Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera Up for 2021 Roberto Clemente Award
Detroit Tigers star Miguel Cabrera is in the running for MLB’s Roberto Clemente Award, and he’s one of only 30 players up for the honor.
The award goes to the MLB player who “best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field,” according to a statement.
Each MLB team nominates one player, and the Tigers went with Cabrera.
“Since joining our Detroit community in 2008, Miguel has been a constant positive force both on and off the field,” Tigers general manager Al Avila said in a release. “Miguel’s support of those in need during some very challenging times over the past year was heroic, but at the same time not at all surprising to anyone that knows him.
“He continues to make an impact in the community both in Detroit and across the state of Michigan, and all of us with the Tigers are proud of his nomination,” Avila added.
One example of Cabrera’s dedication to charity is his work with the Detroit Tigers Foundation to donate $250,000 to assist children and families in Detroit during the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the donation, the Tigers joined forces with the Detroit Public Schools Foundation, G1 Impact, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, Detroit Police Athletic League and Brilliant Detroit.
