Remembering the Year 1990: Detroit History, Music, Pop Culture and More

WRIF first started broadcasting true rock ‘n’ roll to the Motor City on On Feb. 14, 1971, and we’ve never looked back!
It’s been an honor to rock with you for the past 50 years, and we look forward to the next 50.
Let’s look back on these major events and milestones in Detroit and around the globe in the year 1990!

In April, the Red Wings compiled a 28–38–14 record. They finished fifth in the NHL Norris Division.

On April 14th, Michigan started the Adopt-a-Highway program.

In June, the Pistons compiled a 59–23 record. They finished first in the NBA’s Central Division. That season, Isiah Thomas scored 1,492 points.

In October, the Tigers compiled a 79–83 record. They finished third in American League East.

In December, the Lions compiled a 6–10 record. They finished third in the NFC Central Division.

The 1990 Grammy for Record of the Year went to Arif Mardin (producer) and Bette Midler for “Wind Beneath My Wings.”

The 1990 Grammy for Album of the Year went to Don Was (producer) and Bonnie Raitt for “Nick of Time.”

Some of the most popular toys from 1989 included Little Tikes Activity Gym, Barbie Color Change Makeup Center, Nintendo Game Boy Compact Video Game System and Fisher Price Medical Kit.

Famous birthdays in 1990 included Emma Charlotte on April 15, Jennifer Lawrence on Aug. 15 and Kristen Stewart on April 9.

Popular movies from 1990 included “Home Alone,” “Pretty Woman” and “Edward Scissorhands.”

The average income per year was $28,960.
Anne Erickson started her radio career shortly after graduating from Michigan State University and has worked on-air in Detroit, Flint, Toledo, Lansing and beyond.
