ZZ Top is one of the best examples of how great a power trio can be if the right three musicians find each other.
The band’s classic lineup of Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard, and Dusty Hill were together for 51 years until Hill’s untimely death in 2021 at age 72. In fact, those five decades together without changing the lineup is the longest streak of any band in modern music history.
ZZ Top’s blend of blues and Southern rock has influenced so many acts. You can hear it in songs like The White Stripes’ “Ball and Biscuit,” Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble’s “Pride and Joy” and Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band’s “Blue on Black.” Frankly, it’s hard to imagine rock and roll without ZZ Top, which might be one of the best legacies of the band.
