Movie monsters have always been a fascination across the world. There have been some incredibly strange creatures featured in these films over the years. The first movie to ever feature a creature or monster is over 100 years old.

One of the earliest and most influential monster movies ever made was Merian C. Cooper’s King Kong (1933). This movie had a profound effect on the evolution of the monster and horror movie genre. While one of the earliest and most popular, King Kong was not technically the first movie to have a monster or creature be the main focus of a film.

The creature has appeared in novels, comic books, video games, TV shows and several sequels to the original film both in Japan and Hollywood. The First Monster Movie

Before there was King Kong, there was “The Golem”. Back in 1914 directors Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen created the first feature film to include monsters in them. The movie had a runtime of 1 hour and was a German silent horror movie that changed the movie monster genre forever. The Golem is a clay statue that was brought to life nearly 400 years before the movie takes place from a magical amulet.

A modern antiques dealer ends up awakening the Golem again as a servant, but after many crazy events the creature falls in love with a woman and goes on a murderous rampage afterwards. Which if you really think about it, the plot shares some similarities with the plot of King Kong.

The Golem paved the way for countless other strange movie creatures to take center stage. Without the Golem there would be no Godzilla, no King Kong, and no other strange creatures that we will be discussing later!

Strange Ideas and Creatures

Since the 1914 Golem film we have encountered hundreds of movie monsters. As more time passes, we continue to see some very strange and unique ideas. Some great examples of strange movie creatures include the Predator, the monster from Frankenstein, Gamera and many other Godzilla creatures.

But what monsters top them all on the strange scale? Keep reading to find out which 6 strange movie creatures outrank them all. For a list of the most powerful movie monsters be sure to check out that list here.

  • Pumpkinhead

Both a terrifying and bizarre-looking demon, the Pumpkinhead monster is powerful and creepy. Go ahead, look up a picture of him, and tell me he’s pretty!

  • The Thing

The creature from John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” is an alien blob of hideous creation. The film is a psychological thriller and a classic. The Thing is so scary because it’s a game of mistrust. An alien entity enters an Arctic research facility under the guise of a dog and infiltrates the team. The problem is the alien takes the appearance of whoever it kills! It still holds up even though it came out in 1982, and I highly recommend giving this one watch.

  • Xenomorph

The Xenomorphs are the creatures from the Alien Franchise, and they are one of the strangest looking monsters ever. They have a bizarre-shaped head, are coated in solid black, appear almost humanoid and have a titanium inner jaw and tongue that shoots out to terminate their victims. This might be the weirdest thing ever put into a film, and that’s saying something.

  • Biollante

An incredibly weird and unique creature that Godzilla faces is Biollante. Biollante has a bizarre and downright sad origin story. A Japanese scientist mixed DNA with his deceased daughter, Godzilla, and plant cells to create an atrocious-looking plant monster that is just downright strange.

  • Gremlins

This may be a hot take but, the Gremlins are so incredibly strange they had to make this list. First off, they look so weird, and creepy. Not even going to mention the even creepier back story that goes with them. No thanks!

  • The Blob

The Blob is exactly what it sounds like. A blob of slime that came to Earth from a different world. It’s an incredibly strange idea, and even less appealing to see this blob go on a murderous rampage against humans. A truly weird creature and super creative idea for a movie. This would be a very interesting remake with modern technology.
