YOUR NEW FAVORITE SONG Episode 1 (aired 10/28/2024)
Hey there, everybody! My name’s Patrick, and I host Your New Favorite Song! I’m sure many of you missed the show on Monday, and I’m sure even fewer of you listened.
Don’t worry, though; I’ve got you covered! In this little article, I’m going to tell you what we played and even wax on about some specific songs that are personal favorites of mine.
My goal here is to help you find your new favorite song! If you like what you read and live in Detroit with an HD Radio, you should tune in to the WRIF HD2 on Monday at 8 PM for more new music. And so, without further ado, let’s get into it!
Here’s the tracklist:
PYPY – Lonely Striped Sock
Pearl & The Oysters – Cruise Control
Bark Culture – Slippy’s Tune
Orla Gartland – Little Chaos
Nina de Koning – The Night Wasted My Potential
Metronomy x Porij – Petit Boy
La Femme – Love Is Over (Radio Edit)
Marian Runk – Possibility
Eliza Thorn – Alibi
Dubmones – Pet Semetary (Dub Sanctuary – 7 – Radio Version)
Molchat Doma – Kolesom
Vince Staples – “Radio”
total tommy – Plus One
Charli XCX – Sympathy is a knife featuring Ariana Grande
Now let’s talk about three of my favorites, even though I am a fan of all of them. (I program this show, so trust me, I won’t be playing stuff I don’t like.)
First off, I’ve got to sing the praises of Molchat Doma. I am a big fan of their music, and their 2018 album Etazhi is a personal favorite of mine. They’ve carved out such a cool niche for themselves, one that is sonically very frigid and also very groovy. Thankfully, they bring that same energy and then some to their newest album, Belaya Polosa. While they keep the danceability and bareness of earlier releases, there’s also a noticeable uptick in the quality of the recordings. There was an undeniable charm to the lo-fi quality of the earlier stuff, but it’s also reassuring to know that getting their hands on better equipment didn’t hinder them creatively and only helped them create more great stuff. Go check out their most recent record here.
Next, we’ve got some Alibi by Eliza Thorn. I stumbled across her album Somebody New while trawling about it on Bandcamp. Let me tell you what a pleasant surprise that was. From what I can tell, it’s her debut album and a very strong one. The production is fantastic; her singing and playing are very confident, and the sonic has a fair amount of variety. You can’t ask for anything better from a debut! It’s also under a half hour long, keeping it in line with the beautiful tradition of Nashville country artists keeping their albums short and sweet. There’s no reason not to listen, so you better do it! Here’s the link.
Finally, the last song I want to focus on here is Slippy’s Tune by Bark Culture. Once again, as far as I can tell, this is the debut album from this group, and it’s fantastic. It’s only four songs long, but these folks get properly out there with their music. (For example, the third track on this album, Paradise Lawn, is 17 minutes long! Hooray!) This is some solid jazz, just drums, bass, vibraphone, and creativity. So you should check out this album if that sounds like something you’d like (which I mean, c’mon, what’s not to love).
Well, folks, that’s all I’ve got for now. I hope you go check out these albums, and I hope I was able to help you find your new favorite song! Make sure to tune in next week; I’ll see you then!
