Tom Morello on Why Zack de la Rocha is the Greatest Frontman Ever
Tom Morello shared in a recent interview why he thinks Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha is the greatest frontman of all time.
Speaking to Revolver, Morello said, “In my opinion, he’s the greatest frontman of all time. He’s the punk rock James Brown. There’s no one in the history of Western music that has the sort of the totality of spiritual commitment on stage and in the studio as that guy.”
Morello continues, “And it’s matched with a brilliant intellect, and he’s a tremendous musician as well, and it’s really an unbelievable combination. [I] just feel fortunate to be in a band with him.”

The wide-ranging interview touched on a variety of topics including Morello’s AC/DC fandom in relation to his recent cover of 'Highway to Hell' with Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder on his new solo album The Atlas Underground Fire.
“‘Highway to Hell’ and AC/DC was very controversial in the town where I grew up,” said Morello. “It was not only ethnically homogenous, it was also a town that was experiencing a born-again revival during this time.”
Morello detailed, “Rock and roll was talked about openly in the hallways [at school] among kids about ‘Your soul is in peril if you go to the AC/DC concert.’ Each church had a youth group that would have a Christian rock band to try and lure you away from the ‘Highway to Hell’ more to the ‘Highway to the Collection Plate.'”
